African Instruments
With djembés, it is particularly important to pay attention to the quality of the
instrument. Only good instruments allow you to develop a good playing technique.
Therefore, we only import first-class instruments built by the best drum builders
in West Africa: best quality of wood, skins, accessories and workmanship – all at
very affordable prices.
The djembé is a goblet-shaped wooden drum. Very simple tools are used to carve it
out of a tree stem. The drum makers use African timbers such as Woro, Lenke, Dogora
etc. An untanned goatskin is tightened over the finished body. The skin is first
softened in water and then fixed onto the drum body with iron rings and nylon strings.
Once the skin is dry, it is tightened and shaved smoothly. The skin always needs
to be very tight to guarantee optimal sound quality: a deep bass tone that rings
out slightly and a strong, fat sound with very few overtones when struck openly.

Djembé (Gmelina)
Gmelina wood is cheaper, because it grows everywhere. While Gmelina djembés are
available at a lower price, their sound quality is almost on the level of djembés
made from more expensive woods. Therefore, Gmelina djembés are ideal for people
on smaller budgets – students, pupils etc. who nevertheless want to work seriously
and produce a good tone quality.
